「in, on, at」などの基本前置詞に慣れてきたら、次は「似ているけれど違う」前置詞の使い分けです。
「above と over」「between と among」など、日本語訳では区別しにくいニュアンスを、コアイメージで掴んでいきましょう。
今回は、表現力を一段階引き上げるための重要な前置詞を、演習問題を通してマスターします。

1. 上下の位置関係：above / below
「～の上に」「～の下に」を表しますが、over/under との違いが重要です。
- above：基準より高い位置にある（離れている）。レベルが上。
- below：基準より低い位置にある（離れている）。レベルが下。
Point: 「真上・真下」や「覆う」感覚なら over/under。「接触」していれば on。「単に位置が高い・低い」なら above/below です。

2. 動きと経路：through / across
「～を通って」「～を横切って」の違いは、空間の次元です。
- through：内部を通り抜ける（3次元・トンネルのイメージ）。
- across：表面を横切る（2次元・橋を渡るイメージ）。
